What is pima cotton?

Pima cotton is considered a higher grade of cotton. It is spun using longer fibers giving the yarn more drape naturally. Its softer to the touch making it ideal for garments. While is can be used for home goods, it will not have the rigidness associated with traditional cotton yarns.

Memento currently comes in 3 colors: Fuschia, Winter Bloom & Moon Shadow.

What makes this yarn special?

This new yarn from WeCrochet has a variegated coloring structure making it perfect for color pooling. Personally, I like to have more planned color transitions so I wouldn’t be designing around pooling. Remember color pooling that made an argyle pattern? Memento could do that if you were keen to figure it out….I’m not. To avoid more irregular pooling I would choose a pattern that has either long OR short repeats not both. If I’m going to have pooling I’d like it to be consistent.

Memento is made up of 12 strands of 2-ply cotton thread thoughtfully twisted together to form one strand of yarn. They are plied tightly enough that I RARELY experienced any splitting. I hate splitting. Like with a passion. It slows my work and I just can’t have that!

There colors are very few colors offered and I’m not sure why that is. I was originally drawn to the Moon Shadow color because the colors are light, making the transitions easier on the eye. For a more dramatic change in color, the drama of Fuschia with its warm pinks, red & purples would be an excellent choice.

Beware, Memento is listed as worsted weight, however to me it felt more like a DK weight yarn. Something to keep in mind when planning your projects.

Cotton yarns are undervalued and underused in my opinion. I can see this yarn having a lot of uses especially if the colors are expanded. I’d love to see the base red in Fuschia be available. I would be more inclined to use a variegated yarn like this in tandem with a solid. That being said, I think these would look great in a simple fillet crochet design or as an accent with another solid colored yarn.

I like Memento and I’m giving it 3/5 skeins! It is light and soft on the skin but the color range is lacking. Without solids or additional varigated yarns I don’t see this as a main staple in my collection but I could see myself getting more of this for a special project like the ones I’ve listed below because the drape is wonderful.

As always, this is just my opinion as your resident wanna be fiber nerd. Have something to add or questions, please leave a comment below!
