Grainline Blanket Square - Free Crochet Pattern
I am excited to share my blanket square for Moogly Blog’s Year Long Blanket Crochet A Long.This is a free blanket CAL that Tamara of Moogly Blog has put on for the past few years. Each month she shares 2 free blanket squares by different crochet designers on her blog. She even has tips and tricks on how to choose colors for your blanket, helpful notes for creating each square and how to customize the squares for your preferred size.
For my square, I wanted to highlight my favorite stitch of the year, the HDC Cluster. As someone who is obsessed with minimalistic design, stripes in the hdc cluster was a no brainer. This square can be expanded to a full blanket by continuing the rows. It is also fully customizable with how your stipe it so have fun!
My square uses Berroco Vintage Yarn in 4 colors. This is a smooth wool blend yarn with impeccable stitch definition. It comes in over 25 color-ways including rich tonals and weathered options. I chose to use, Lapis, Fennel, Oats & Petunia. I love how these jewel tones work put together. If stripes aren’t your thing, you can make your version in as many or as few colors as you like. I worked up a single color version and I really liked it!

Get to know Berroco Vintage yarn

Pattern Notes
Special Stitches - Clu - Cluster
YO, insert hook into previous stitch, pull up a loop, YO, insert into next stitch, pull up a loop, YO pull through 5 loops.
This pattern uses a crochet shorthand to keep the instructions clean and easy to follow:
“2hdc” means work two half double crochet stitches into the same stitch.
“Hdc 2” means work one half double crochet in each of the next two stitches.
Chains do not count as a stitch in this pattern
You can change colors anywhere within the pattern. I reccommend changing colors at the end of an even row.
The size of this square is customizable. Work until your desired height then begin your decrease rows.
Pattern Instructions
Row 1 (WS) - Magic Circle Start: In a MC, hdc 3.Turn. (3 sts)
Row 1 (WS) - Chain Start: Ch 3. In the third ch from the hook, hdc 2. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 2 (RS): Ch 1. 2hdc, clu, 2hdc. Turn. (5 sts) *If you used the Chain Start, place
the last st in the starting ch of the previous row.
Row 3: Ch 1. 2hdc, hdc until one st remains, 2hdc. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 4: Ch 1. 2hdc, clu until one st remains, 2hdc. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 5 - 22: Repeat Rows 3 & 4. (45 sts)
Row 23: Ch 1. Hdc2tog, hdc until two sts remains, hdc2tog. Turn. (42 sts)
Row: 24:Ch 1. Hdc2tog, clu until two sts remain, hdc2tog. Turn. (40 sts)
Row 25 - 44: Repeat Rows 23 & 24. (3 sts)
Row 45: Ch 1. Hdc3tog. (1 st)
Border
You will now work along the edge of the square to make a smooth border. Be sure to place your sts evenly around the border.
Ch 1. Work (Sc, ch 1, sc) into the corner, sc 30, [ (sc, ch 1, sc), sc 30.] Repeat [ to ] until the end of the rnd. Slst to join. Fasten off.
